Modern machine tools operate at high speeds, which places greater demands on safety guards. Are your safety glass panels sufficient in the event of a tool breakage? We will work with you to investigate what happens when tool fragments or workpieces are ejected from the machine room. Our impact tests also provide you with reliable evidence of your components’ containment capabilities.

What is an impact test?

An impact test simulates extreme situations, such as tool breakage, and evaluates the resilience of safety glass and protective devices against sudden, high loads. To do this, a projectile is pneumatically accelerated and fired at the test object at a controlled speed (measured by laser). The material’s response is documented in a test report and through high-speed footage to verify safety in the machine environment.

The centerpiece of the impact testing laboratory is a test cannon consisting of a compressed-air tank and a flanged barrel. It is triggered by a compressed-air valve and can accelerate projectiles with a diameter of up to 300 mm. 

The projectile velocity is recorded by a laser light barrier, and two high-speed cameras film the moment of impact. This allows the resulting damage to be visually assessed and photographically documented afterward.

Complete machine doors and fronts as well as entire enclosures can be tested. Standard test specimens often measure 450x450 mm, but machine doors with diameters of several meters can also be tested.

  • in-house production of projectile holders, precisely tailored to your requirements thanks to additive manufacturing,
