How can small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) approach knowledge management (KM) in a targeted and systematic way? This question is addressed by DIN SPEC 91443, which was published in August 2021. With information regarding the planning, implementation, control and continuous development of systematic knowledge management, the document provides a standard that is intended to give SMEs a low-threshold approach to the topic. To this end, DIN SPEC supports companies in defining the focal points and areas of application of knowledge management, in deriving precise and verifiable goals, and in planning and implementing knowledge management measures. It also addresses how to create conducive framework conditions, structures and incentives so that employees build up, share and purposefully apply knowledge in their daily work.
DIN SPEC 91443 was developed by a group of experts from both science and practical application. Among those involved were scientific staff from Fraunhofer IPK. The KM team at our institute has been intensively involved in knowledge management for more than two decades. Participation in the expert group on DIN SPEC provided the team with a welcome opportunity to transfer its knowledge to industry and society.
DIN SPEC 91443 is compatible with DIN ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 30401 − central statements of both standards are taken up in the specification and detailed in a format suitable for medium-sized companies. In this context, the guidelines of DIN SPEC 91443 in particular form a bridge function to DIN ISO 30401 (Knowledge management systems − requirements) for companies that want to introduce a comprehensive knowledge management system according to DIN ISO 30401.
