Half a Century of Fraunhofer IPK
The oldest Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. Founded in the divided city and thriving in the federal capital, we have been reinventing production for half a century. Our mission is to use digital tools and methods to make manufacturing economical, resource-efficient, and human-centered.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK was founded on 1 September 1976 as the first Berlin institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Initially established by Professor Günter Spur as the »Berlin Research Institute for Production Technology«, its purpose was to translate research results from basic university research into industrial applications. Today, we are proud to say that Fraunhofer IPK is one of the leading institutes in applied production research. We are driven by a desire to continually reimagine the future of production, developing innovative technologies and solutions for industrial manufacturing for our customers and partners in Germany and beyond.
In our anniversary year 2026, we will be celebrating our institute with a campaign offering exciting insights into 50 years of production research. We invite you to join us – on our digital channels and at numerous events. Visit our anniversary website for more information.
