Digitally integrated Production

Fraunhofer IPK at Hannover Messe 2018

It is the magic of orchestras: Many different voices and instruments join to create a beautiful symphony. When we try to understand how such harmony is possible, we immediately think of the individuals who contribute: Only with each musician and each instrument adding their voice correctly to all others can dissonance turn into harmony. What we forget is that the instruments themselves are again a symphony of components, aligned and brought together in perfect harmony to do their job for the greater whole. This is the idea behind the two exhibits presented by Fraunhofer IPK at Hannover Messe 2018. At two Fraunhofer booths we take a look at the topic of digital networking in industrial production, but at two different levels of granularity, two degrees of magnification.

One image, two perspectives

At the booth of the Fraunhofer Group for Production in Hall 17, we are considering the bigger picture to demonstrate how production facilities by different makers and with different standards can be orchestrated to work with each other – smoothly and efficiently. Our exhibit at the main Fraunhofer booth in Hall 2 zooms in much closer: Together with our partners at the Berlin Center for Digital Transformation, the Fraunhofer Institutes FOKUS, HHI, and IZM, the exhibit looks into the inner workings of such facilities to reveal how the effective connection of components in a single machine can add substantial value for industrial production as a whole.
