Laser Powder Cladding

A fine layer of powder melted by a laser beam gives standard components enormous powers of resistance and is also suitable for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) applications.

Technological progress calls for components of exceptional robustness, able to withstand the high temperatures, high pressures and permanent friction standard in modern products. Conventional workpiece properties are incapable of meeting such rigorous requirements. The solution is laser powder cladding, one of the core competencies of Fraunhofer IPK. Special cladding techniques can turn even conventional products into high-tech ones.

This technique involves welding of a powder filler material onto a given component. This enables the component properties to be carefully aligned to meet the new requirements without any need to redevelop the component from scratch. The highly resistant outer layer significantly prolongs the service life of the product and is a key factor in sustainable production.

Laser powder cladding technology also makes repairing components more cost-effective than replacing them. The technique gives service-degraded components a new lease of life, while also saving time and conserving resources. Components overhauled in this manner are in every way equal to their factory-new counterparts and, when it comes to turbine blades, for instance, also represent immense savings.
